February 19, 1937 — June 15, 2026

Anderson

Carl Thomas Muterspaugh, 89, long time resident of Anderson, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on June 15, 2026, at Community Hospital in Anderson. Carl was born on February 19, 1937, in Mechanicsburg, Indiana, to the late Basil and Nora Muterspaugh. He often shared fond stories of his father and cherished the many happy memories he had growing up.

A man of strong faith, Carl attended Redeemer Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge, where he enjoyed signing up and visiting with friends.

Carl had a lifelong passion for racing. He loved NASCAR and spent many years racing the figure 8 at Sun Valley Speedway, where he drove the No. 63 car.

Carl was known for his strong work ethic. He retired from Nicholson File after 22 years of service and was also employed by Carter Express and G.W. Pierce. Following his retirement, he fulfilled his dream of owning his own business, Carl Muterspaugh Garage and Auto Sales. There, he worked alongside his nephew, Jerry Lee Muterspaugh, for many years until his final retirement.

When he wasn’t working or racing, Carl enjoyed tending to his yard work and garden. He especially loved Christmas, and he and his wife, Peggymae, were well known for their large holiday display that brought joy to many in the community and was even featured in the Herald Bulletin.

In his later years, Carl remained active and busy. He enjoyed riding to job sites with his son, fixing up his tractor, and of course, helping his son with the #63 race car.

Carl is survived by his son, Timothy (Rebecca) Lemon; daughters, Carla Lysher and Robin Phillips (John Mahaffey); special grandson, Clinton Phillips; granddaughters, Rachele (Shawn) Martin, Brittney (Zach) Dollar, Nikole Leonard, Christi (Justin) Doll, Tammy Muterspaugh (Cody McPherson); sister-in-law, Betty Muterspaugh and many great grandchildren.

A special thank you to Jason and Shelly Taylor for all their time spent with Pap, he enjoyed every minute. And also, to Brenda Ranes for having their Puzzle building nights.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Peggymae Muterspaugh; two sons, John Thomas and Ronald Muterspaugh; brothers, Curt Allspaugh, Robert and Chod Muterspaugh; daughter-in-law, Kathy Muterspaugh.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm Friday, June 26, 2026 at Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Middletown. You may express condolences or share memories of Carl at www.ballardandsons.com.
