JoAnne Johnston, 81, of Daleville passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday June 28, 2026. She was born in Anderson on September 18, 1944, to the late Walter D. and Monica (Fox) Broderick-Mehling.
She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Anderson then went on to obtain her nursing license from Notre Dame.
Known for having a heart for helping others, JoAnne genuinely gave her life to serving others. A nurse for over 50 years, she passionately cared for her patients while working at Community Hospital, in Hospice at Ball Memorial Hospital and then becoming the Nursing Supervisor at Middletown Nursing and Rehab. She was a member of the Middletown Church of the Nazarene. JoAnne enjoyed traveling and knitting in her spare time.
JoAnne is survived by her children, Sharon Ann (Nelson) Escalante of Anderson and David (Brenda) Johnston of Elwood; grandchildren, Lori (Wesly) Lewis, Monica (Paul) McGuire, Nelson Escalante, Joy Escalante and Cheri Grace Escalante; great grandchildren, Simon and Audrey Lewis; sister-in-law, Loreeta Mahoney; nephews, Brian and Jeffrey Mahoney and niece, Shannon Kelly.
In addition to her parents JoAnne is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, David Johnston.
Services will be on Thursday July 2, 2026, at 6:00 pm at Middletown Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Phil Rogers officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until the time of services. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be given to the Middletown Church of the Nazarene Benevolence Fund. You may express a condolence or share a memory of JoAnne at www.ballardandsons.com.
