Joy Elaine Zachary

Joy Elaine (Cheatham) Zachary, 70, went to be with the Lord and Savior Saturday, August 12, 2023. She was born on April 10, 1953 to Troy Cheatham and (Mary) Helen Smith.
Joy graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1971. She then graduated from APEX Beauty School and worked as a beautician the rest of her life for clients and family. Joy also worked as the head cook at Shenandoah Elementary School where she later retired. She married her high school sweetheart, Melvin Archie Zachary on November 25, 1972. She was a loving wife, dedicated mom of four children, nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Bob and Donna Greene were a great influence on instilling Christian beliefs which were shared between her and Melvin to guide a long-lasting marriage of 50 plus years.
Joy was a long-time member of the Mechanicsburg UMC where she and Melvin led worship. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, games and watching sports. She was talented at crocheting, knitting, sewing, (providing gifts and teaching), writing backwards, playing piano, softball and was a valuable bowler on the church bowling team. Joy was an avid reader in which her Bible was her favorite. Sitting on the porch inspired her days while watching hummingbirds and birds.
In passing, she was re-united with special people, her brother, Danny Cheatham; step-dad, Leon Munden; mom, Helen Munden; daughter, Megan Zachary and Aunt, Donna Greene.
Joy is survived by her husband of 50 plus years, Melvin Zachary; 3 children, Melissa (David) Hicks of Vinton, VA, Nathaniel (Jody) Zachary of Rosemont, MN and Kyle (Lisa) Zachary of Indianapolis; 9 grandchildren, Nate, Aaron, Jamie, Shannon, Marah, Regan, Hunter (Addison), Paxton and Sullivan; 1 great granddaughter, Mia.
Services will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Middletown with Rev. Doris Winford officiating. Burial to follow at Miller Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Megan Dawn Zachary’s scholarship fund through the Mechanicsburg Good News Church at 5130 North Mechanicsburg Road, Middletown, IN 47356. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
