Mary Jacalyn Hodge

December 14, 1954 — September 2, 2025

Anderson

Mary Jacalyn Hodge, 70, of Anderson, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. She was born on December 14, 1954, to the late Lawrence and Eleanor (Katon) Whitehead.

Mary was from a large family and learned to be a hard worker, dedicating 33 years of her life to Payless Grocery in Anderson before retiring in 2016. Her commitment and work ethic were admired by all who knew her. She carried a loving nature that made her a comfort and a safe haven to those around her. Described by her family as thoughtful, selfless, and strong, she put others before herself with an effortless grace. Even in the face of unimaginable pain, she never complained, offering instead a wealth of good advice, kindness, and a friendly smile. Even in some of her last days, Mary was thinking of others, sharing these words with her family; “Cry for me once a day, while in the shower, but then go on about your day and live life.” Mary was both the best mom and the best wife, leaving a lasting mark of love on her family. Mary left this world with peace and is no longer in any pain.

Life with Mary was filled with memorable moments, especially during the holidays that she cherished, particularly Christmas and Easter. She adored the joyous Easter egg hunts with her family and grandchildren, each hunt filled with laughter and excitement. Mary and her husband shared a profound love for the outdoors, enjoying camping and fishing together. One of their most cherished memories was their final fishing trip, where they triumphantly brought home an impressive catch of 72 fish.

Living on the “Ranch” with her husband was a dream come true for Mary, as she immersed herself in the beauty of nature. She found joy in working alongside him doing auto-body work. An avid bird lover, she spent time watching and feeding her feathered friends, always finding peace in their presence.

Mary's vibrant personality extended beyond her family; she was known for running a bingo hall, sharing laughter and joy with the community. She was the CEO of the family MonopolyGo game, a testament to her playful spirit and leadership within her loved ones. Annual girls' trips to Florida were highlights of her life, filled with adventure and cherished moments with close friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 54 years, Floyd Hodge; children, Wendy Renee Jones, Rob (Dayna) Hodge, and Amanda (Thomas) Case; grandchildren, Robert “Bubba” Farley, Jamie (Tyler) Russell, Tre Jones, Taylor Brashear, Aryal (Steven) Weisheit, Austin (Ashley) Hodge, Sydney Case, and Kaleb Case; 12 great grandchildren; siblings, Nancy Humphrey, Theresa (Denny) Price, Liz Dorsey, Mike (Charlene) Whitehead, Joe (Kathy) Whitehead, Tom Whitehead, Ralph (Linda) Whitehead, and Richard (Donna) Whitehead; special friends, Anita Richard and Veronica Summitt; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Raye Whitehead; great granddaughter, Lyndah Weisheit; and sister-in-law, Joyce Whitehead.
