Middletown

Norman Eugene Haynes, 99, of Middletown, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026. He was born on July 15, 1926, in Middletown, to the late Virgil and Mary (Barrett) Haynes.

Norm dedicated much of his life to service, both in the military and within his local community. Mr. Haynes honorably served in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his military service, he built a distinguished career in parts management for Chevrolet, serving at various locations before retiring in 1983 from Sam Pierce Chevrolet. Even in retirement, Norm found ways to stay active and engaged, working at First Merchants Bank in Middletown as a courier and coin counter.

He was a devoted member of the American Legion Post 216 for over 50 years and a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). His deep involvement with the Masonic community was particularly notable; he was a distinguished member of Masonic Lodge 271, where he achieved the rare and remarkable milestone of 75 years with the lodge. He attained the rank of Master Mason in 1949 and expanded his Masonic journey by joining the Knights Templar division of the York Rite Masonry in 1952.

Norm enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests that brought joy and balance to his life. He enjoyed NASCAR and was an avid golfer and bowler. He was passionate about fishing and camping, and found delight in America’s favorite pastime—baseball—especially rooting on the Cincinnati Reds.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Sharon Harshman and Chris (Steve) Sheets; grandchildren, Randy Harshman, Jason Harshman, Jaime Hudson, Maria (Matt) Brann, and Alan (Melissa) Sheets; great grandchildren, Maggie Harshman, Gaia Harshman (Victor Tønnersen), Paden Hudson, Myah Harshman, Maverick Brann, Rylie Hudson, Makaleigh Brann, Morgan Sheets, Gabby Sheets, and Ainsley Sheets; siblings, Ralph Haynes and Janet (Bill) Crabill; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Norm was preceded in death by 12 siblings.
