Russell "Bub" Eugene Darling, a cherished member of the Middletown community and a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on July 26, 2025, at the age of 82. He was born on July 11, 1943, to the late Paul and Emma (Keesling) Darling.
Russell lived his entire life in Middletown; a place he called home. Russell was a proud Cossack graduate of Middletown High School, where he was known for his bright personality and infectious sense of humor. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the Army and honorably served for two years, including a deployment to Vietnam. Upon returning from military service, he began a new chapter in his life when he married his loving wife, Jill.
Professionally, Russell dedicated 32 years of his life to Delco Remy, where he became a respected member of the UAW local 662 Auto Workers Union. His commitment to service extended beyond his career; he also worked as a volunteer firefighter, demonstrating his dedication to the safety and well-being of his fellow community members.
A longtime member of the 6th Street Christian Church, Russell was deeply involved in church activities. He sang in the choir and served as a deacon, always ready to lend a helping hand around the church.
Russell had a passion for wood carving and was an active member of a carving club in New Castle. He also enjoyed playing music, particularly the guitar and the Lowrey organ. His love for music took him on journeys, performing for many, including brightening the days of residents at nursing homes.
Truly being the definition of a "funcle," Russell treasured his role as an uncle and cherished moments spent with his grandchildren. He was the life of the party and found joy in family gatherings, often entertaining everyone with his playful antics and silliness. He loved spending time at Jill's parents' pool, where memories were made, one notably involving a diving board that met an untimely end due to a spirited splash.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 57 years, Jill Ehrhart Darling; daughters, Andrea (Wayne) Smith and Carrie Ellen Darling; grandchildren, Drew (Taylor) Pickett, Seth (Kimberly) Pickett, Evan (Jade) Pickett, Shannon Smith, James Smith, and Jon (Kelli) Smith; five great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Charles (Jean) Ehrhart; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and companion dog, Georgia Sue Darling.
In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his parent-in-laws, Harold (Muriel) Ehrhart; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara (Kenny) Poston, nephew, Perry Poston; and companion dog, Buddy Darling.
Services will be held at 1:00pm Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Middletown with Pastor Charissa Ramey officiating.
