William “Bill” Swaby, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at his residence in Daleville, IN surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on April 10, 1933 to the late Orval T. and Laura (Ladson) Swaby in Sullivan County, IN.
He graduated in 1951 from Pleasantville High School, Pleasantville, IN. Upon graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Nellie “Goodman” Swaby.
Bill retired after 37 years of service to Delco-Remy, where he worked on the split pulley line prior to his retirement. He enjoyed camping, fishing, square dancing, round dancing, woodworking and spending time with his family.
Bill belonged to the UAW Local 662, Family Campers of Delco-Remy, FCRV Kokomo Campers, Footloose Singles, as well as Madison County Promenader’s and Grand Spinners.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Nellie Swaby; sisters, Betty Sullivan, Doris Enochs, Irene French, Lois Wehmeier and Judy Kenworthy; brother, Robert Swaby; son-in-law, John West.
He is survived by his daughters, Jeanne (Mark) Pickett of Middletown, IN, Debra West of Daleville, IN and Linda Hedrick of Warsaw, IN; 5 grandchildren, Jeremy (Amy Bentley) Dennis of Middletown, IN, Franklin (Heather) Platt of Hartford City, IN, Rebecca (Daniel Madson) Berry of Fairmount, IN, Amanda Boicourt of Middletown, IN and Billy Hedrick of Warsaw, IN; 9 great grandsons, Elijah, Alexander and John Platt of Hartford City, Hunter Wattenbarger of New Castle, Kennedy Mullins of Fairmont, Gabriel Madson of Sheridan, Caleb Jordan of Middletown, Paxton Roemer of Anderson; step-great granddaughter, Whitney Chandler of Anderson; sister, Carolyn Racer of Linton and his companion of 16 years, Rita Ritenour, Anderson.
The family would like to express their deepest thanks to caregivers, Lisa and Tammy of Heartland Hospice, ProMedica of Marion, IN for the support and care they gave during this past year.
Services will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Ballard and Sons Funeral Home in Daleville, IN with Pastor Gary Cable officiating. Burial to follow in Saunders Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Fund at 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
